Plates: Outgoing

So you all know that I am a huge fan of the Plate Mail.  I had two plates left and I was saving them for special people, and until I could get my hands on a $2 Waves of Color stamp.  I got my hands on a Wave stamp, but I had to go to Boston to get it.  None of my local Post Offices were carrying it, and I was told flat out that they would not be getting it at all.

I learned this past weekend that unless I remember to go to the Post Office in Boston when I am there on Tuesdays, the North Kingstown Post Office on Post Road seems to have a variety.  I was able to score two $5 stamps {that they were holding for me because I called earlier in the week} on Saturday.  While they were hunting for my reserved two it was clear they had a few sheets of them.

I sent this plate to my friend Ryan.  Ryan is in basic training in North Carolina.  I met Ryan through my night job, where he and his family are some of my VIP's.  They all know that I am a snail mail fanatic, so when he left he made his parents promise that they would give me his address.  I regret that this is the only thing I found the time to send him, but at least it was interesting.  I am hoping that it both got delivered and that he was not humiliated for it.  The goal was fun and humor, not humiliation.

I sent this pink plate to my friend Kathy.  She has a few dogs who would probably enjoy this as a frisbee.  She got this the day after I sent it, which is one of the few awesome things about living in a tiny state.

Wave! Finally!

These things are really great in person.

Well Hello There

Hello my fellow mail lovers and blog readers, long time no write :-)

I know you all are a forgiving bunch, but I wanted to let you know I am alive and getting into the routine of working every day!  I got back from Colorado Springs on the 9th, then worked my second week at my new big-girl job.

Yesterday I made a cake, then I helped a neighbor make a cake and I spent the rest of the night working on some maps.

Today, I cleaned my room and did laundry.  Can I ask you all, when the heck do people who work for a living have time to do laundry??  Sheesh.

Anyway, my point is, part of cleaning my room was gathering all of the wonderful, beautiful mail I've received over the last several weeks that I have yet to reply to or post about.  I'm going to need to get a system and a routine down, but I will get back to each and every one of you.  I'll also send out some postcards I bought in Colorado and Acadia National Park.  And one luck pen-pal will be getting one of these.  I found them at a great postal shop in Colorado Springs.  I mailed two to my littlest pen friends and I bought a third for myself.

Also, I want to say that I am frustrated with the Postal Service.  Remember my adventures in mailing plates?  Well, I got to my Aunts house and I asked her about the green plate I sent her.  She never received it.  I mailed four other ones and they all arrived to different locations in Rhode Island.  I mailed one to Colorado Springs, with a return address, and it never made it and it never came back to me.  I am sad about it.  That was a cheap plate with a beautiful, heartfelt letter on it.

Anyway, I thank you all for your patience, for making sure there was mail for me when I got back from my vacation, and for your good thoughts.  I know we barely know one another, but I know you all are as happy I got a job as I am.

Mailing Plates

Miss Hailey and her Pink Plate
A few weeks ago I stumbled across yet another very cool mail blog:  Epistles - Minor and Major by M. Howard.  One of the very first posts I read was this one, where Ms. Howard mailed a neon green plate, as is.

"Epic!" I thought. "I am totally doing that!"  So I made my very first visit to Dollar Tree, where I discovered that the plates come in both green and pink.  They each come in a four-pack, so $.25 per plate and $1.95 to mail in the US.  It was the first time I had ever mailed anything not in a box or envelope.  The mail clerk at my local post office was shocked when I handed him the plate, but he took it anyway.

I sent a pink one to Miss Hailey and a green one to Mr. Preston, each asking them all kinds of questions about their favorite summer foods.

I sent a green one to Auntie Pat telling her about my favorite memories of her food and how I strive to be as good in the kitchen as she is.  It was more a green plate food love letter :-)

A pink one went to Alison and to her I wrote my very favorite summer recipe.  Her mailman won't deliver anything that won't fit in her mailbox so she had to make a trip to the post office to pick it up.  I knew that when I wrote it so I apologized on the plate to her for having to make the trip.  Apparently as her kids were bringing it to the car Alison thought it was a frisbee :-)

Another pink one went to Christine, who I met at a job interview.  I told her about the plate I sent to Alison and she wanted one.  Since we both laughed until we cried during my job interview, she sent me her home address so I could stalk her by mail.

One green one ended up at the fire station near my house as part of a bribe (long story).

So I have one pink plate and one green plate left just waiting for owners!

I had so much fun doing it that I sent Ms. Howard a thank you post card for the inspiration and the fun.

So now I am dying to get my hands on one of these pigeons so I can have some more unusual mail fun!  I think one of them wants to make a trip to Hawaii.
